Michael Gilmor Fund for Leadership and Empowerment

The Michael Gilmor Fund for Leadership and Empowerment was established to honor the memory of Michael Gilmor and his dedication to promoting international understanding.

Michael Samuel Gilmor (September 8, 1995 – August 25, 2018) cherished his time as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Poland in the academic year 2017/2018. He particularly enjoyed working with Polish youth in remote areas of the country, volunteering his time to ensure all students had equal opportunity to learn from an American grantee, sharing his American culture, and learning more about others’ cultures.

Michael passed away tragically and unexpectedly due to cardiac complications when he returned to the United States after his Fulbright year. Michael was a particularly optimistic and friendly individual, and made an extra effort to befriend everyone during his time teaching in Poland. This Fund, established primarily through the efforts of Briana Krewson and Pamela Howland (Fulbright grantees to Poland 2017-18), will ensure that Michael’s actions and efforts live on.

The objective of the Michael Gilmor Fund is to share diverse aspects of American culture and promote international education and intercultural cooperation throughout Poland, specifically by American Fulbright grantees in Poland conducting a variety of outreach activities (listed below) with remote/rural or under-served students in Poland.

We encourage grantees to use the fund to work with learners of all ages and backgrounds in remote Polish primary and secondary schools that would not otherwise have access to a Native English speaker. We also encourage grantees to engage in a variety of activities involving communication and culture.

Finally, Michael felt strongly about supporting initiatives that empower women in STEM fields, so we encourage educational projects/meetings to have a STEM component if possible. (We recognize that focusing on supporting women in STEM will not be possible for every project.)
