Who I am:
I am a first year Master student of biotechnology at the Lodz University of Technology and prior to that I obtained a MSc degree in marine microbiology in Bremen, Germany.
Microbiology has been my passion since middle school, when I first learned about the part of the world invisible to the naked eye and was instantly captivated by it. Now, as a Master student, I am especially interested in environmental microbiology and antibiotic resistance in bacteria, but honestly I would love to learn about every aspect of this beautiful science, even briefly.
Outside of academia my main interests are writing, poetry, as well as watching movies. On those rather rare occasions when I am actually outside, you can catch me mountain hiking.
My BioLAB work in the lab focuses on:
I will be joining the laboratory led by Dr. Kaplan, where I will be investigating microbial alternatives to traditional antibiotics, which are essential in times of omnipresent antibiotic-resistance. The main focus of this research is a predatory bacterium, which can attack other bacteria, including pathogens, and kill them. Taking a closer look at this fascinating microbe and its predation cycle is possible with the use of cryo-electron microscopy.
I decided to apply for a BioLAB program because:
I am always looking for opportunities to join new exciting projects and BioLAB is a perfect way to do this. I had a chance to previously challenge myself with working in a laboratory abroad and I believe that a foreign environment is both demanding and enriching. Working at the University of Chicago, as a part of an international team of scientists will definitely be a great way to broaden my scientific horizons.
After completing my stay on BioLAB Program I would like to:
My dream (and goal at the same time) would be to start a PhD in environmental microbiology and be able to further discover the amazing world of microbial diversity.
