Aldona Szewczyk
Who I am:
I am a second-year Master’s student in Molecular Biotechnology at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, with a strong interest in neuroscience, particularly neuro-oncology, cancer, and stem cell biology. I am a curious and highly motivated science enthusiast with a growth mindset and openness to new challenges. My current research focuses on the metabolic and molecular plasticity, as well as the invasiveness, of glioblastoma multiforme cells in response to chemotherapeutic stress under normoxic and hypoxic conditions. I am also currently the Principal Investigator of a Student Research Project focusing on cancer biology.
As a two-time Erasmus+ scholarship recipient, I gained international research experience at the Cambridge Stem Cell Institute and the Netherlands Cancer Institute, where I contributed to projects developing innovative therapies for the treatment of glioblastoma multiforme. I also completed internships at the Mossakowski Medical Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Malopolska Centre of Biotechnology at the Jagiellonian University.
Beyond the lab work, I actively engage in academic life as a member of the Scientific Association of Biotechnology Students, co-organizing scientific conferences and workshops that promote science.
In my free time, I love traveling, exploring new cultures, and photographing nature. I also enjoy dancing, singing, and spending time with friends.
My BioLAB work in the lab focuses on:
I will have the pleasure of joining Dr. Sarah Ocañas’ lab at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation. My BioLAB project will focus on testing the synergistic effects of pro-longevity and monoclonal antibody therapeutics in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Using age-relevant mouse models, the project aims to correct the altered cellular environment (specifically neuroinflammation and metabolic dysregulation) to improve cognitive function and reduce neuropathological damage.
I decided to apply for a BioLAB program because:
it offers a unique opportunity to advance my scientific development at prestigious institutions, working alongside leading scientists in an international environment and having access to cutting-edge technology. This internship will enable me to deepen my knowledge, refine my skills in advanced laboratory techniques, gain new ones, and expose me to innovative research approaches. I see this program as a valuable opportunity for personal and professional growth, broadening my horizons, expanding my network, and contributing to groundbreaking research. I believe that this program will open many doors for my future career.
After completing my stay on BioLAB Program I would like to:
continue my passion for scientific work by pursuing Ph.D. studies. My dream is to contribute to science and help people by developing more effective therapies that could save countless lives.
