My participation in the BioLab program at the University of Chicago is still a short but already intense adventure, full of inspiration and new experiences. Although my stay here lasts only three months, I have fully immersed myself in the scientific richness this place offers. I am working in a lab focused on motor protein research, where, using advanced microscopy techniques like TIRF, I study the dynamics of myosin-10 in filopodia in the context of calcium wave activity in cells. This opportunity feels like a dream come true – every day, I learn something new and refine my research skills, gaining invaluable experience.
The university, however, is not just about the lab; the student atmosphere here is incredibly engaging and encourages all kinds of initiatives. Since my arrival, I have joined several clubs: water polo, ping pong, ballet, bridge, outdoors, and the astrophysics club. I have already had the chance to observe the aurora borealis, a comet flyby, and soon, we are heading to a water polo tournament! The scale of events, seminars, and networking opportunities is impressive – every day, there are several inspiring meetings with outstanding professors from around the world, including Nobel laureates.
I am also auditing a few courses and have noticed that while the content is similar to what I experienced in Poland, there is a much greater emphasis here on interaction, discussion, and collaborative projects. This approach beautifully fosters openness, networking, and a sense of belonging to the scientific community.
Staying in the USA is also an opportunity for me to experience cultural diversity and embark on an adventure of discovering the country, its rich culture, and incredible nature. I have already visited New York and Indiana Dunes National Park, and now I’m preparing for Dia de los Muertos in Mexico! The BioLab Program is not just about learning but also about unforgettable cultural experiences and unique personal growth. The program provides not only the chance to gain unique knowledge and experience but also to satisfy a curiosity about the world, develop hobbies, and discover new passions.
